How to capture Authentic and Unique Photos during a Home Photoshoot

A home is so much more than just a house. It’s the place where memories are forged. Joyful and sorrowful tears are sown. Stories are told over the breaking of bread and pouring of wine. It’s a sacred space, your safe space.

At home photoshoots are unique - they serve beyond the purpose of having photos taken…

They are an experience. An opportunity to slow down in the midst of the busyness and chaos of life. It’s a way to remember… to be present… and to be fully yourself.

During our time together, Lindsey went about some of her favorite at-home activities and shared some stories and memories along the way. In this season of her life there’s been grief and heartache, but there’s also been a really beautiful, raw and renewed relationship with Jesus being forged. These photos were not just a special way to honor and remember the life that was lived here, but something to look back on and remember all of what God was doing and growing in this season.

Technically, Lindsey and I met just a little over 3 years ago, outside of the Burger Up that was destroyed by the tornado on this very day in 2020. She was the first person my (now) husband introduced me to as his “girlfriend”. 3 years later we have become friends, and I had the honor of photographing her in this special and sacred space.

Home lifestyle photography shouldn’t be manufactured or forced. Here’s how to keep it real:

  1. Music. Having some favorite tunes playing in the background will make all the difference!

  2. Utilize areas and spaces that are beloved and used often. This will help them to settle in and get comfortable - it’s familiar and well loved. You’ll be able to more easily fade into the background as you capture what is happening.

  3. Instead of posing, have them do something. It can be reading a book, cooking, dancing - whatever it is that they enjoy doing in their space.

  4. It’s not about a perfectly posed shot - this is about capturing authentic moments as they happen. Remembering this will help you view the scene more cinematically.

  5. Ask questions! Get them talking about favorite memories or things they enjoy in the space! This will help bring the environment to life for the both of you!

Here are some of my favorite photos of Lindsey in her home:

woman arranging spring flowers
woman sitting on the counter in her kitchen
woman and her white husky cuddling on the floor
woman sitting and praying on her couch
woman playing piano in all white loft studio
