The most important thing to know when shopping for an anti-bride wedding dress.

As an editorial wedding photographer, I’ve seen a fair amount of wedding dresses over the last 14 years, and there’s one very important thing I’ve learned…

The dress of the bride should 1. Make her feel and look absolutely beautiful when she is wearing it, and 2. The dress should be solely her choosing.

These two things are especially important if you’re going for an anti-bride and less traditional look!

I have unfortunately heard many horror stories of brides who try on a multitude of dresses and discover “the one”, only to have a family member or friend make a comment that causes doubt for the bride. I have seen brides then become paralyzed by fear in making their decision, or who wonder if the dress they bought was the wrong choice.

So here’s how to avoid a wedding dress failure…

  1. Don’t be absolutely married to the idea of the kind of dress you want. Be willing to try on a few kinds of dresses. Sometimes we love how something looks on a hanger or on someone else, but we wind up not loving it on us.

  2. Whoever you bring with when you try on dresses, make sure they are someone who will be 100% supportive of your choice, and be an advocate of what YOU love!

  3. iPhone photos will never do you justice, so don’t make your decision based on how you look in an iPhone photo you take at the bridal shop. Spend as much time as you need looking in the mirror, and know that if you do take iPhone photos, they will look dramatically different than when a professional photographer captures you in your dress.
