Couple Posing: How to be intimate & comfortable in front of your photographer

Do you struggle to feel comfortable in front of a camera? Does your significant other feel awkward being photographed, much less trying to be all cute and intimate while being photographed? This post is for you!

There are some key things you can do to feel comfortable in front of your photographer, and feeling less awkward having your photo taken. You don’t have to be models to get swoon-worthy, dreamy portraits - you just need to feel comfortable!

When posing couples for portraits, these are the main 4 things I’ve encouraged:

  1. First of all, get to know each other before the shoot! Do a phone call, grab coffee, or ask some fun questions over email! I also recommend spending a few minutes chatting before your photo shoot experience begins! This will help break the ice, and also give the perspective that all of you are just people - there is no one to impress, and no reason to feel like you’re being judged.

  2. Communicate with your photographer about any particular things you are self-conscious of. This way you know it’s on their radar, and they will have your back!

  3. Create a playlist with songs you love to have playing in the background! Music to fill the silence tremendously helps!

  4. Most importantly - remind yourself that this isn’t performance, and that this is not a runway show. No one is expecting you to look or act perfect. The only thing you need to be is YOURSELF! The version of you that dances around the living room when your favorite song comes on - the side of you that comes out and makes you all cuddly + cute when your significant other has been gone and walks through the door - this is you, and this is what we are here to capture. I’m just a fly on the wall with a camera.
